Top 5 Brunch drinks and cocktails

Brunch is one of my favorite meals. But a Champagne Brunch is the best meal of the week. There are plenty of other drinks, beside Champagne, to choose from. Here’s my top 5 list of classic brunch cocktails. Cheers!

Bloody Mary

Bloody Mary

Bloody Mary

The Bloody Mary is a time honored brunch classic.  Its great for curing hangovers and goes well with most brunch foods. You can spice it to your own liking by varying the amount of tabasco sauce.

  • 3 parts tomato juice
  • 1 part vodka
  • 1 part lemon juice
  • Dash of tabasco sauce
  • celery salt
  • ground pepper
  • Garnish with a celery stalk and lime wedge
Mimosa

Mimosa

Mimosa

Part Champagne, part freshly squeezed orange juice – the Mimosa is a simple and elegant brunch cocktail.

  • Half a glass of Champagne or Sparkling Wine
  • Half a glass of freshly squeeze orange juice
  • Serve is a chilled champagne flute
  • Garnish with an orange slice
A traditional Mimosa contains a splash of triple sec. I prefer mine with just Champagne and fresh orange juice. You can also try a splash of grenadine or Cognac for extra flavor.
Screwdriver

Screwdriver

Screwdriver

The Screwdriver is a favorite brunch cocktail. It’s easy to make, refreshing, and goes well with most foods. The freshly squeezed orange juice will help you with your daily vitamin C fix to boot. Win-win right?

  • 1 part vodka
  • 6 parts freshly squeezed orange juice
Popular variations of the classic Screwdriver have amusing names. Add sloe gin to the mix for a “sloe screw” or serve in a tall glass for a “long screw”. Add Southern Comfort to the cocktail for a “sloe comfortable screw”, or Galliano if you want a “sloe screw against the wall”. The possibilities (and lols) are endless!
Bellini

Bellini

Bellini

Traditionally a Bellini is made from the nectar of white peaches and Italian sparkling wine (Prosecco), but you can use Champagne just as well. This popular cocktail goes nicely with salads, fish and other light brunch dishes such as omlettes.
  • A table spoon or 2 of peach puree or nectar at the bottom of the Champagne flute
  • Slow top with chilled Prosecco
Substitute sparkling cider for Prosecco for a Baby Bellini. You can also experiment with other berries and fruits to give the Bellini an interesting twist. Some of my favorites are the Mango (or Bombay) Bellini with mango nectar and the Elderflower Bellini using elderflower syrup.
Irish coffee

Irish coffee

Irish Coffee

You can’t have brunch without coffee. If you’re looking for something a bit stronger than a latte or a cappucino, why not make your coffee “Irish”.
  • 3 parts strong black coffee
  • 1 part Irish Whiskey
  • 1 part whipped cream on top
  • 1 tea spoon of brown sugar
